Generation of Leaders is a grassroots group that seeks to build the next generation of African leaders. Through community education, we aim to provide opportunities for young people to learn about themselves while addressing social issues that impact them.

Our youth-led social impact initiative is a recipient of the Laidlaw Foundations PopUp Grant for youth organizing on climate change: Healing the Land.
Project title: Young Africans and Climate Justice

Description: Young Africans and Climate Justice is a participatory action community-based research project which seeks to raise the voices of young Africans. We will be exploring the experiences and stories of African Canadian youth and the impact that climate change has had on their homelands and in their lives. Additionally, we will highlight the importance of honouring land and encouraging our participants to make a pledge towards climate justice.

Episode 1: Abideen Oguntade
I pride myself in not limiting myself to the things I can do. I go out of my way to not box myself but explore opportunities to learn, teach and excel. I am an enthusiastic smart worker that brings confidence and professionalism to any workforce I find myself a part of. I possess a range of technical and interpersonal skills that have aided me to stand out in multiple disciplines and sectors from Aviation, Engineering, Building Maintenance, Customer service and even Palliative care.

This is my story.
We have produced a total of 5 episodes for the Young Africans and Climate Justice documentary series, with each episode featuring 1 of 5 young individuals who share their unique stories and perspectives on climate change. Additionally, we have invited 3 expert speakers to contribute to various episodes.
The first episode premiered on September 25, 2023, in collaboration with VIDEA, a British Columbia-based NGO.

Episode 2: Vickey Natiki
My name is Vickey and I am in pursuit of establishing a career in the legal field. I currently work as a legal assistant and reside in Ontario. I am South Sudanese, but born in Kenya and raised in Canada. The majority of my life was spent in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as I just recently moved to Ontario. I hope to stay in Ontario and build a life here.
